Why distance eats volume so fast

  • Dual (~130 dB): Two trumpets. Plenty to turn heads across a yard or a campsite and clear a trail ahead of you, but the first tier to fade once you're a long way out or there's traffic noise.
  • Quad (~140 dB): Four trumpets and the all-around sweet spot. Roughly twice as loud to your ears as the Dual, so it holds its presence noticeably farther — across a full fairground, down a long boat ramp, over a running engine.

  • Background noise. This is the big one. A quiet rural area at night can sit around 20–30 dB, so a horn stays audible until it decays almost to a whisper. A busy street runs 60–70 dB or higher, so the horn vanishes into the din the moment it drops to that level — often within a few hundred feet.
  • Terrain and obstacles. Sound carries over flat ground and open water beautifully. Hills, tree lines, and buildings block, absorb, and scatter it. I lose half my effective range the second there's a row of houses between me and the listener.
  • Wind and weather. Sound travels with the wind farther than against it, and still, humid, cool air — like a calm morning — carries it noticeably better than a hot, gusty afternoon.
  • Where you aim it. Train horn trumpets are directional. Point them down the road or out over the water and the range out front jumps; mount them facing the pavement and you'll feel it more than the guy a quarter mile away will hear it.

Put it together and the picture is consistent: same horn, wildly different range depending on the world around it. On open water or an empty field, even a Dual surprises people. In stop-and-go city traffic, you'll want a Quad or Extreme just to be sure you're heard at the distance that matters — the intersection ahead of you.

Remote range vs. how far it's heard

Two different distances get mixed up here, so let me separate them. The audible range is how far the sound travels — everything above. The remote range is how far away you can stand and still trigger the horn with the wireless fob.
