How I Ran This Sound Test
Same conditions for every horn, or the comparison is worthless. My setup:
- One battery: the same fully charged Milwaukee® M18™ 5.0Ah pack swapped between horns, so battery state couldn't skew the results.
- Open ground: a flat gravel lot with no walls or buildings within a few hundred feet — reflections off structures can add several dB and change the tone you hear.
- Ear protection on, every blast. The Extreme tier is rated past 150 dB at the trumpets, and NIOSH's ceiling for impulse noise is 140 dB — a single unprotected blast at that level uses up 100% of your allowable noise dose for the day.
- Short blasts: one to two seconds. That's all you need to hear the character, and it's kinder to your neighbors and the horn's duty cycle.
One thing to keep straight before we compare: the tier ratings — 130, 140, 150+ — are measured at the horn, not at a distance. Sound falls off roughly 6 dB every time you double your distance from the source, so what a bystander hears at 100 feet is a very different number. Dual (130 dB): A Hard, Sharp Two-Note Punch
The Dual runs two trumpets, which means two notes sounding at once. What you hear is a tight, aggressive two-note blast — closer to a serious commercial-truck horn than a locomotive. It has real bite up top: the sound leads with a bright, cutting edge that snaps heads around instantly. What it doesn't have is the low-end weight. You hear the Dual clearly; you don't feel it in your chest.
Standing at 50 feet, my honest read: nobody mistakes it for a toy, but nobody mistakes it for a freight train either. It says "professional vehicle, move" — which for a lot of buyers is exactly the right message. It's the tier I'd pick for a daily driver in town, where you want authority without the full railroad-crossing effect.
Quad (140 dB): The Train Chord Shows Up
Add two more trumpets and everything changes. The Quad's four trumpets are cut to different lengths, and each length speaks its own note — so instead of a two-note blast you get a four-note chord. That chord is the entire reason train horns sound like trains. Real locomotive horns like the Nathan AirChime K5LA stack five notes between 311 and 622 Hz, and a four-trumpet horn lands in the same sonic neighborhood: thick, layered, slightly dissonant in that unmistakable railroad way.
The loudness jump is real too. Ten decibels is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness to the human ear, so the Quad doesn't sound "a little" louder than the Dual — it sounds about twice as loud. Why Phone Videos Lie — and How to Record an Honest Sound Test

Every buyer watches sound-test videos before ordering, and I'll say it straight: your phone cannot capture what these horns do. Phone microphones and their recording chains are built for voice-level sound. Point one at a 140+ dB blast and the mic overloads — the waveform clips, the automatic gain control slams the level down, and what survives is a flat, crackly honk at the same playback volume as everything else in your feed. A clipped recording is permanently damaged; no editing brings back what the mic never captured. That's why a 130 dB Dual and a 150 dB Extreme can sound nearly identical in a phone video when they are worlds apart in person.
If you want to record a test that's at least honest about character (if never about loudness), here's what works for me:
- Back the camera off. I film from 100+ feet. Distance drops the level into a range the mic can survive, so the chord comes through instead of a square wave.
- Show the distance on camera. Walk it off or film a landmark so viewers can calibrate what they're hearing.
- Capture a reference sound — a regular car horn from the same spot. Relative difference survives on video even when absolute loudness doesn't.

Which tier sounds most like a real train?
The Extreme. The Quad already has the four-note chord, but the Extreme's longer trumpets push the chord lower, and that deep fundamental is what people recognize as a locomotive. In my testing it draws the most "looked for the train" reactions by a wide margin.
Does a bigger M18™ battery change the sound?
No. Any charged Milwaukee® M18™ pack drives the horn to full voice — a higher amp-hour battery buys you more blasts per charge, not more volume or a different tone. Tone is set by the trumpets, not the pack.
Can people really tell the Dual and Quad apart?
Instantly. It isn't a subtle volume difference — the Dual is a two-note truck-style blast and the Quad is a four-note train chord. Even side by side on video, the character difference survives better than the loudness difference does.
Do I need hearing protection for the 130 dB Dual too?
Yes, if you're near the trumpets. 130 dB at the horn is still far above safe unprotected levels for close-range impulse noise. Foam plugs cost less than a coffee; use them for every tier.
