The timing is spelled out too. The engineer has to start the sequence at least 15 seconds — and at most 20 seconds — before the locomotive reaches the crossing. And if the train is moving faster than 60 mph, the horn can't start more than a quarter mile (1,320 feet) out, even if that means the warning runs shorter than 15 seconds. So when the pattern feels like it drags on forever, that's the point: it's a rolling warning that doesn't stop until the train is physically in the intersection.

Long blasts carry the warning out ahead of the train; the short blast breaks the pattern up so it can't be mistaken for anything else — wind, a truck horn, another train on a parallel track. On the farm. My neighbor runs 300 acres, and cell coverage dies past his second barn. Where Not to Use the Crossing Pattern
I'll say this straight, because "loud is a feature — install it right" cuts both ways. Don't sound the long-long-short-long sequence anywhere near an actual rail line. That pattern means one specific thing — a train is about to occupy a crossing — and faking it near real tracks can confuse drivers, pedestrians, and crews in a place where confusion kills. Keep the crossing signal at the crossing.
Beyond that, my standing rules for signal use: private property or off-road, never as a traffic weapon; warn people nearby before a test blast; and wear ear protection any time you're within a truck-length of the trumpets. At 130 to 150+ dB near-field, these horns are past the threshold where a single close-range blast is a hearing risk — that's exactly why they work at distance, and exactly why you respect them up close.
