Pair a second, they both fire the same horn, independently, with no switch-over or mode change. A typical learning-code receiver of this type holds several stored transmitters at once — commonly four — so two remotes isn't even pushing it.
My daily setup is exactly this: the standard fob rides on my keychain for firing from the driver's seat, and the long-range remote stays clipped inside the center console for when the horn is on the boat lift or across the yard. On my horns the standard fob is rated up to 160 ft and the long-range unit up to 2000 ft line-of-sight, and they take different batteries — two CR2016 coin cells in the fob, a common 9V in the long-range remote — so I'm never in a spot where both go dark on the same day.

Adding a remote is the same learning-code procedure I walked through when I replaced a lost remote, and the part people worry about most is a non-issue: pairing a new fob does not erase the old one. Can a Stranger's 433 MHz Remote Set Off Your Horn?
Now the paranoid question — and it's a fair one, because the 433 MHz band is a crowded neighborhood. These horn remotes operate around 433.92 MHz, the same license-free low-power band used by garage door openers, gate remotes, alarm fobs, and weather-station sensors. eBay and Amazon are full of generic "universal" 433 MHz remotes for a few bucks. So why doesn't your horn answer all of them?
Because frequency is only the radio channel, not the key. A learning-code transmitter of the common EV1527 type carries a unique ID programmed at manufacture — the scheme allows for over one million distinct transmitter codes — and the receiver fires only for IDs stored in its memory. A random 433 MHz fob is shouting on the right channel with the wrong name. In practice the receiver ignores it completely. I've clicked a cheap generic 433 MHz remote at my own horn from two feet away, on every button, just to check: nothing, every time.
Same logic answers the buddy question. If your hunting partner buys the identical horn, his remote carries a different factory ID than yours. Park the trucks side by side and click away — his fob fires his horn, yours fires yours. Cross-firing only happens if you deliberately pair one fob to both receivers, which is a feature when you want it and silent when you don't.
The Honest Caveats: Cloners, Found Fobs, and Rolling Code
I don't do marketing-brochure security claims, so here's the full picture. Learning-code systems are not encrypted in the way modern car keys are. There are cloning remotes sold for gate and garage use that capture a fixed- or learning-code transmission and replay it — that's their whole product category. Someone standing near you with a cloner at the exact moment you fire your horn could, in principle, copy the fob's code. Rolling-code systems like Microchip's KeeLoq-family chips used in garage and automotive fobs defeat that by changing the transmitted code on every press so a captured code is rejected as already used; simple horn remotes don't use rolling code.
Before that keeps you up at night, weigh the threat model. A cloned garage remote opens your house. A cloned horn remote plays a very loud prank, once, from within a couple thousand feet of a horn that has a battery clicked in. Here's how I make even that scenario a dead end:
- Pull the M18™ pack when the horn sits. No battery means the receiver isn't listening — no remote on Earth can wake it. I do this anyway to skip the receiver's small standby draw.
- Lost a fob in public? Wipe and re-pair. A found remote that's still paired is a bigger real-world risk than any cloner. Hold the learn button until the LED confirms the memory is cleared, then re-teach only the fobs in your hand. Costs one minute.
- Remember the trigger. These are drill-style horns with a physical trigger on the body. The radio link is a convenience layer; if you ever distrust it, the horn still works with the remote memory wiped clean.
FAQ
Can I pair three or four remotes to one horn?
Generally yes — learning-code receivers of this type commonly store several transmitter IDs, often four. Pair each one the same way: learn button, press the fob, confirmation blink. If your manual states a lower limit, the manual wins.
Does pairing a second remote weaken the first one somehow?
No. Stored IDs don't interact. Each paired fob fires the horn independently, and removing one from your pocket doesn't affect the others. The only thing that clears a stored fob is the deliberate erase procedure.
Will a garage door or gate remote on 433 MHz trigger my horn?
No. Even on the identical frequency, the receiver only responds to transmitter IDs it has learned. Your gate remote's ID isn't in the horn's memory, so the horn ignores it — same reason your horn fob doesn't open the neighbor's gate.
Can two remotes fire the horn at the same time?
The receiver acts on the signal it hears; two people mashing buttons simultaneously just means the horn fires — it won't confuse or damage anything. The horn blasts as long as a valid button is held, same as with one fob.
What if I want a second remote but my horn came with only one?
