It draws power from that vehicle's battery, triggers off that vehicle's horn circuit or a switch you add, and stays bolted to that vehicle until you unwire it. The listings promise "150 dB" almost universally — I've even seen Amazon listings advertising "300 dB," which should tell you everything about how seriously to take the marketing numbers. You're routing wire through the firewall, finding a dry mounting spot for the compressor, and crimping connections that have to survive road salt and engine heat.

Skip the relay and wire the horn straight to the button circuit, and you're pushing compressor-level current through thin factory wire that was sized for a small stock horn. Best case you pop fuses; worst case you cook the wiring or damage the clockspring in the steering column. I've fixed that exact mistake on other people's trucks more than once.

A multi-trumpet horn with a real compressor behind it is a different animal — more trumpets, more air, more sound pressure. That's true for quality 12V trumpet kits and it's true for the battery-powered tiers. The difference is that the battery horn delivers it without the wiring project.

One thing I'll say every time, because I mean it: anything in train-horn territory is a hearing hazard up close. NIOSH considers noise hazardous at 85 dBA and above, and at 130-150 dB you're way past that. I wear ear protection when I'm testing next to the horn, and I don't blast it near people's heads. Loud is a feature — install it right, use it right.

Portability: One Truck vs. Everything You Own

Are cheap 12V "150 dB" train horns really 150 dB?

Treat the number as marketing until proven otherwise. Real locomotive horns are capped by federal rule at 110 dB(A) at 100 feet, and I've seen budget listings claim up to "300 dB" — a number nothing on wheels produces. Cheap snail horns typically meter out near a strong stock car horn. Multi-trumpet horns with real compressors are where genuine train-horn sound levels start.

Can I move a 12V horn between vehicles?

Not practically. It's hardwired: relay, power feed, signal wire, mounting. Moving it means unwiring one vehicle and re-doing the install on the next. A battery-powered horn moves in the time it takes to pick it up.

Do I need to buy a Milwaukee® battery to run the battery horn?
