How Fast Does a Milwaukee® M18™ Battery Recharge? Charge Times by Charger, and My Event-Day Spare-Pack Plan

Every fall somebody at a tailgate asks me the same thing: “If I run the pack down blasting this thing all afternoon, how long until I’m loud again?” I’ve timed my own Milwaukee® M18™ packs on three different chargers, so here’s the real answer — anywhere from about 25 minutes to about 4 hours, depending entirely on which pack and which charger you own — plus the two-battery rotation I run on event days so my horn never goes quiet.

The short answer: 25 minutes to 4 hours

The train horn itself has no say in this. The battery clicks off the horn’s foot and onto the charger like it would from any other 18v load, and from there the recharge clock is set by two things: the pack’s chemistry class and the charger’s output.

  • Best case: a FORGE™ 6.0Ah pack on Milwaukee®’s dual-bay Super Charger goes from empty to full in about 25 minutes — and hits 80% in about 15 minutes.
  • Worst case: a big HD12.0 High Output pack on the basic multi-voltage charger takes about 241 minutes. That’s four hours. Halftime won’t save you.

Everything else lands in between, and the spread is wide enough that it’s worth knowing your exact combination before the day you actually need it.

Charge times by pack and charger

I pulled these numbers from Milwaukee®’s published charge-time specs and the independent tests that verified them, and they line up with what my own bench timer says. Times are minutes to a full charge.

Two things jump out of that chart. First, the Super Charger’s headline speed — Milwaukee® advertises up to 4x faster charging, and up to 6x to 80% on the dual-bay version — only shows up on High Output and FORGE™ packs. Slide a standard XC5.0 onto a Super Charger and you get Rapid Charger speed, about an hour, no bonus. The older packs simply can’t accept the higher charge current. Second, the little CP2.0 is quick on any charger. Twenty-six minutes on the basic unit that probably came free with your drill kit is nothing to complain about.

Does a horn owner even need a fast charger?

Honest answer from a guy who owns all three chargers: for the horn alone, probably not. A battery-powered train horn is a short-duty-cycle load — the compressor only draws current for the second or two you’re on the button. I’ve covered the full count in my blasts-per-charge guide, but the headline is that a 6.0Ah pack delivers 500+ short blasts, or roughly 200 sustained two-second blasts, before it taps out. Most people don’t hit a horn 500 times in a month, let alone a Saturday.

So the charger question really comes down to how you use your packs. If the horn is your only 18v gear and you top the pack off the night before, the free standard charger is all you need. Where charge speed starts to matter is when the horn shares batteries with your drill, impact and blower — or when you’re running an all-day event and the pack that comes off the horn needs to turn around fast. My event-day spare-pack plan

Here’s the rotation I actually run at tailgates, race pits, and regattas. It takes two packs and whatever charger you already own, and the horn never sits silent:

  • Night before: both packs go on the charger to 100%. Fuel-gauge check with the button on the pack — four bars or it doesn’t ride along.
  • Pack 1 rides the horn. Pack 2 rides in the truck cab — not the bed. Batteries hate baking in the sun, and a cool spare charges faster and lasts longer.
  • Swap at the first low-charge sign. When the horn starts sounding a little lazy on spin-up, I swap packs. Takes five seconds — same click as on a drill.
  • If there’s power nearby, rotate. A charger in the RV, the trailer, or on a buddy’s generator turns two packs into effectively unlimited horn. With a High Output 6.0Ah on a Super Charger, the drained pack is full again in 35 minutes — long before the second pack is anywhere near empty.

A single charged 6.0Ah covers any realistic game day on its own; the spare exists for the day you forget to charge, the cold morning that saps capacity, or the buddy who discovers the remote.

Will the Super Charger speed up my older standard packs?

No. Standard packs like the XC5.0 and CP2.0 charge at Rapid Charger speeds on a Super Charger — roughly an hour for the 5.0. Only High Output and FORGE™ packs accept the faster charge rates. If all your packs are standard, a Rapid Charger gets you the same result for less money.

Is fast charging bad for the battery?

Milwaukee® built the Super Charger with an active cooling system, and the charge rates are within the specs the High Output and FORGE™ packs were designed around. What actually shortens pack life is heat from outside — charging a pack that’s been sitting in a hot truck bed, or storing it at full charge in the sun. Let a hot pack cool before it goes on the charger.

Can I charge a pack at the event itself?

If you’ve got any AC source — RV outlet, trailer power, a generator in the pit — yes, and that’s what makes the two-pack rotation effectively unlimited. One pack runs the horn while the other charges, and with any High Output pack on a fast charger, the charger side of the rotation always finishes first.

How long does a charged spare hold its charge in storage?

Lithium-ion self-discharge is slow — a pack topped off the night before will still be effectively full on event day. The bigger risk is temperature, not time: keep the spare in the cab or a cooler bag, not on the dash or in the bed.
