My sled has no horn. My dirt bike has no horn. And every winter I end up in at least one situation — a blind trail junction, a moose that won't move, a buddy half a mile back with a dead machine — where I really want one. Why Snowmobiles and Dirt Bikes Are Basically Silent Machines

Sounds backwards, right? A sled at full throttle is loud. But that noise is engine and track — it tells nobody where you are or what you're about to do, and it's capped anyway. Most snowmobile states limit total machine noise to 78 dB(A) measured at 50 feet under the SAE J192 test — Minnesota writes it straight into state rule 6100.5700, and Michigan, Maine, Montana, and New York have the same 78 dB(A) number on the books. That's the machine as manufactured. A dedicated signal? Snowmobiles don't come with one.

Dirt bikes are worse. Off-road models ship from the factory with no horn at all — a horn only becomes mandatory when you convert the bike for street use. So out on the trail you've got exactly two ways to get someone's attention: rev the engine, or yell into your helmet. I've tried both. Neither works past about 50 yards, and winter terrain makes it worse — hills, tree cover, and snowpack absorb and scatter sound, so a rider one ridge over may hear nothing at all.

What I Run: A Train Horn for the Milwaukee® 18v Battery

I spent years around 12V air-tank horn kits, and I'll say it plainly: a compressor, a tank, a relay, and pressure lines have no business on a snowmobile, and there's nowhere to put them on a dirt bike anyway. The battery-powered route deletes all of it. The horn is one sealed unit with trumpets and a built-in pump — you click a Milwaukee® M18™ pack onto the base, and it's live. No air tank, no compressor, no wiring into the machine. The same packs I run in my impact wrench all winter power the horn.

The lineup runs from a Dual at 130 dB to Quad models at 140 dB up to the Extreme tier at 150+ dB. For reference, a stock motorcycle horn — on bikes that even have one — puts out roughly 100 to 110 dB. Decibels are logarithmic, so the gap between a stock horn and a 140+ dB quad isn't "a bit louder," it's a different category of sound.

Cold Is the Real Test — Here's What the M18™ Pack Actually Does

Any lithium-ion pack slows down in the cold. Around 32°F (0°C) a lithium-ion battery typically gives up 20–30% of its rated capacity, and by -4°F (-20°C) the loss can reach half. That's physics, not damage — cold thickens the electrolyte and raises internal resistance, and the capacity comes back when the pack warms up.

What that means in practice on a sled:

  • Expect fewer blasts per charge in single-digit temps than the same pack gives you in July. Plan for it; don't be surprised by it.
  • Keep the pack warm until you need it. My spare 5.0Ah rides in an inside jacket pocket, not in the tunnel bag. A pack at body temperature hits full power instantly.
  • Never charge a frozen pack. Charging lithium-ion below 32°F can cause lithium plating on the anode — that one IS permanent damage. Let the pack warm indoors first.
  • Run a bigger pack in winter. The capacity you lose to cold hurts a 2.0Ah a lot more than a 5.0Ah.

How I Carry It on the Sled and the Bike

The whole point of this horn is that there's no installation. Here's what I actually do:

  • Snowmobile: the horn rides in the tunnel bag or strapped flat to the rear rack, trumpets facing out, battery clicked on. The remote fob stays zipped in my chest pocket. I can fire the horn without taking a glove off the bar.
  • Dirt bike: there's nowhere to mount anything on a 230-pound bike, so the horn goes in my hip pack or backpack, grab-and-blast style. At a trailhead or camp it sits on the tailgate and covers the whole area by remote.
  • Group riding: one horn covers the crew. Whoever's sweeping carries it; the lead rider carries the remote. That 2,000-foot remote range means the front of the group can fire the horn at the back of the group.

When I Actually Fire It on the Trail

A 150 dB horn is a tool, not a toy — my rule is that it fires when somebody needs to know something right now. Real examples from last season:

  • Road crossings and blind junctions. Groomed trails cross plowed roads constantly. One blast before I commit tells anything I can't see that I'm there.
  • Regrouping a spread-out crew. Voices and engine revs die within a couple hundred yards in snow-damped woods. The horn doesn't.
  • Wildlife on the trail. Maine alone has more than 30,000 moose, and the state's official snowmobile guidance is clear: stop, keep your distance, and wait for the animal to leave the trail. That's what I do — the horn is the last resort for the rare animal that closes distance instead, and one blast from a few hundred feet beats any close encounter.
  • Breakdowns. A machine that won't start at dusk, miles from the truck, is exactly when you want a signal that carries. My crew's convention is simple: three short blasts means come find me.

Two safety notes, because I mean them: wear ear protection when you're testing or blasting at close range — 130+ dB up close is genuinely hazardous to hearing — and never fire it next to another person, a horse, or a leashed dog. Loud is a feature. Install it right, use it right.

FAQ

Will it still fire at 0°F?

Yes. The horn itself doesn't care about cold — it's the battery that slows down. A lithium-ion pack near -20°C can be down to about half its rated capacity, so you get fewer blasts, not zero blasts. Keep the pack in your jacket until you strap in and you'll barely notice the difference.

Do I have to wire anything into the sled or bike?

No. That's the whole reason I run this style of horn on powersports machines. The horn is self-contained: trumpets, pump, and battery mount in one unit. Click an M18™ pack on and it works. Nothing touches your machine's electrical system.

How loud is it compared to what my machine has now?

Your dirt bike almost certainly has nothing — off-road models ship without horns. Street bikes typically run 100–110 dB stock horns. This lineup starts at 130 dB (Dual), the Quads run 140 dB, and the Extreme tier is 150+ dB. Even the entry model is louder than anything that comes on a powersports machine.

Is a loud horn even legal on snowmobile trails?

The 78 dB(A) sound laws on the books in snowmobile states regulate the machine's own noise — exhaust and track as manufactured — not a handheld signal device you carry. That said, local land managers set their own rules, and blasting a train horn for fun near cabins or trailheads is a fast way to lose trail access for everyone. Use it as a safety signal and nobody will ever complain.

Which battery should I bring for a winter ride?

A 5.0Ah pack, kept warm, is my winter default — cold-weather capacity loss hits small packs hardest. Carry the spare inside your jacket, and never charge a pack that's still below freezing.
