A counterfeit Milwaukee® M18™ battery doesn't just shortchange you on runtime — under the sustained draw of a train horn compressor, a fake pack with no real overload protection is a fire risk sitting in your truck bed. I've had two of them cross my bench through my mobile electrical work, and both came from the same place: an online marketplace deal that looked a little too good. Here's every check I run before any pack clicks onto one of my horns.
Why a Fake Pack Is a Bigger Problem on a Train Horn Than on a Drill
A train horn for the Milwaukee® 18v battery runs a compressor hard for the full length of every blast. That sustained, high-current draw is exactly the load counterfeit packs handle worst. In an independent teardown test by the Project Farm channel, two of three knockoff 18v packs started smoking under heavy load or short-circuit testing because they had no functioning overload protection. A genuine Milwaukee® pack shut itself down; the fakes cooked.
The Power Tool Institute — the trade group representing major cordless tool manufacturers — warns that counterfeit and knockoff lithium-ion batteries often skip the safety testing legitimate packs go through, and can overheat, catch fire, or explode. The FBI and the Intellectual Property Rights Center issued a public alert about counterfeit battery scams in November 2022, warning that scammers exploit online marketplaces to move unauthorized replicas (FBI PSA, ic3.gov). This isn't a theoretical problem. The fakes are out there in volume, and they look better every year.
The 60-Second Physical Inspection: Screws, Labels, Weight
Before I trust any pack I didn't buy new from an authorized dealer, it gets this once-over on the tailgate. No tools needed except your eyes and hands.
- Check the screws first. Genuine M18™ packs are assembled with Torx-head screws, including security Torx on the end positions. The fakes documented in the long-running Garage Journal counterfeit thread used ordinary Phillips screws in the middle of the case and non-security Torx on the ends. Phillips heads on an "M18" pack are close to a smoking gun.
- Heft it. Genuine packs are heavy because good lithium-ion cells are heavy. In the Project Farm comparison, the genuine Milwaukee® pack weighed 1,077 grams while the three knockoffs came in between 596 and 663 grams. You don't need a scale — a fake feels wrong in your hand next to a real one, like a movie-prop version of the pack you own.
- Read the label like a skeptic. Crooked labels, blurry printing, misaligned lettering, and missing serial numbers or date codes all show up constantly on fakes. Genuine packs have a clean serial and a manufacture date code; many counterfeits skip the date code entirely.
- Look at the plastic. Genuine housings are a consistent matte red. Several documented fakes ship in a shinier, brighter red with visible mold seams and rougher battery contacts.
Two Bench Tests That Expose a Fake
If the pack passes the eyeball test, these two checks catch most of what's left.
The fuel gauge test. Press the charge indicator button and watch how the lights behave. On documented counterfeits, the gauge LEDs were dimmer than genuine and all lit at once instead of stepping up the way a real pack's indicator does. It's a small tell, but it's cheap insurance and takes two seconds.
The charger test. A genuine Milwaukee® charger talks to the pack's electronics. Fakes frequently charge oddly — finishing suspiciously fast, running hot, or refusing to communicate properly. If a pack behaves strangely on a known-good charger, retire it. I don't gamble with lithium-ion, and I really don't gamble with lithium-ion bolted next to a fuel tank.
Price and Seller Red Flags
Most fakes never need a physical inspection to catch — the listing gives them away before they ship.
- The price is impossible. A genuine M18™ REDLITHIUM™ 2.0Ah compact pack runs about $100 at retail; counterfeit versions have been documented selling for as low as $40 online. The knockoffs in the teardown test cost $22 to $30. Real cells cost real money. Nobody is selling you a legitimate new 5.0Ah pack for thirty bucks.
- The seller isn't authorized. Per Ohio Power Tool's reporting, there are zero authorized Milwaukee® dealers on Amazon — every Milwaukee®-branded battery there is third-party marketplace stock. eBay and Facebook Marketplace are the other two channels where documented fakes keep surfacing. The Power Tool Institute's standing advice is to buy batteries only from the original manufacturer or an authorized retailer.
- The capacity claim is inflated. Counterfeiters print 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah, or 8.0Ah on the shell while installing cheaper, lower-capacity cells inside — sometimes reconditioned cells pulled from used packs, aged just enough to survive past the return window. The label is marketing; the cells are the product.
What's Actually Inside a Counterfeit Pack
The teardown numbers explain everything you feel in the field. The genuine pack in the Project Farm test was built on larger 21700-format cells measuring 3,140mAh each. The knockoffs used smaller 18650-format cells that measured just 1,520 to 2,082mAh — roughly half to two-thirds the energy per cell, in a lighter, cheaper package.
That gap showed up exactly where you'd expect: the genuine pack ran a test tool for over 39 minutes while the knockoffs quit between 16 and 26 minutes. On a horn, that's the difference between a full day of blasts at the lake and a pack that taps out before lunch — assuming the fake's electronics tolerate the compressor draw at all. My Pre-Flight Check Before Any Pack Touches the Horn
I run an Extreme Quad Train Horn for Milwaukee® 18v Battery (the Extreme Quad) on my F-250, and every battery that rides with it has passed this routine:
- Bought new from an authorized dealer, or inspected with the full checklist above if it came from anywhere else.
- Screws, weight, label, serial — the 60-second physical.
- One full charge on a genuine charger, watching for heat or a suspiciously fast finish.
- First run on the horn happens on the bench, not on the road: a few long blasts, then I feel the pack. Warm is normal. Hot is a verdict.
One more thing: openly branded aftermarket packs — the ones sold as Milwaukee®-compatible that don't pretend to be genuine — are a different animal from counterfeits, but my take on running them under a horn compressor is the same cautious one I laid out in my off-brand battery compatibility guide. The horn doesn't care whose name is on the shell. It cares whether the cells and the protection circuit can feed a compressor without folding.
FAQ
Can a fake battery damage the horn itself?
The bigger risk is the pack, not the horn. A counterfeit with weak cells will sag under compressor load and cut blasts short, and one without proper overload protection can overheat at the pack level. The horn's own electronics simply see low voltage — but I still wouldn't feed one to any of my gear.
I already bought a suspicious pack. What now?
Don't run it and don't toss it in the trash — lithium-ion doesn't belong in household garbage. Open a return or dispute with the marketplace, and if that fails, take the pack to a battery recycling drop-off. Counterfeits also carry no manufacturer warranty, so there's nothing to salvage by keeping it.
Is a used genuine pack safer than a cheap new fake?
In the teardown testing, a five-year-old genuine 5.0Ah pack still outperformed every knockoff tested. A tired real pack loses capacity gracefully; a fake can fail ugly. If the budget is tight, used-genuine from a seller you can verify beats new-fake every time.
Which genuine pack should I actually run on the horn?
