I get this question more than you'd think: "Cole, can I run that thing on my bicycle?" Short answer — yes, I've carried a Train Horn for Milwaukee® 18v Battery on an e-bike for two weeks of commuting, and it absolutely works. But it's a different animal than a purpose-built bike horn, and the weight and mounting tradeoffs are real. Here's what actually happened.

Why I Bothered: Bike Bells and "Loud" Bike Horns Have a Ceiling

A standard bike bell puts out roughly 75–85 dB. That's about the level of a telephone ring — and it's the same range as ordinary traffic noise, which means a driver with the windows up and the radio on never hears it. That's not an opinion; it's why the "loud bike horn" category exists in the first place.

The big names in that category are honest products, and I'll give them their due:

  • Delta Airzound — an air horn you recharge with a bike pump, rated up to 115 dB with adjustable volume.
  • Hornit dB140 — an electronic horn marketed as the world's loudest bike horn at a claimed 140 dB, with a quieter 121 dB mode for bike paths.

Here's the part the spec sheets don't advertise. An independent test at BikeLockWiki measured these horns at a realistic distance — 10 meters, roughly where a driver actually is — and got 80.6 dBA from the Airzound and 70.7 dBA from the Hornit. The Airzound was the only bike horn in that test that clearly registered on a meter inside a car. So even the best-in-class bike horns are fighting to be heard through glass and road noise. That gap is exactly why people start looking at train horns.

What I Actually Ran on Two Wheels

My test unit was the Extreme Quad Train Horn for Milwaukee® 18v Battery — four metal trumpets, 150 dB output, fired either by the trigger or by a wireless remote that reaches up to 2000 ft with the long-range fob. It's a self-contained, drill-style unit: the M18™ battery clicks into the bottom, and there's no air tank, no compressor, no wiring to the bike. That last part matters enormously on a bicycle, because there's no 12V electrical system to tap anyway.

The loudness gap over even the Hornit's claimed 140 dB isn't small. Decibels are logarithmic — every 10 dB is ten times the sound energy. And remember, the Hornit measured 70.7 dBA at 10 meters in real-world testing. When I fire the 150 dB quad-trumpet horn, cars a full block away react. Nothing sold as a "bike horn" does that.

The Honest Tradeoffs: Weight, Bulk, No Handlebar Mount

I'm not going to pretend this is a drop-in replacement for a bar-mounted bike horn, because it isn't. Three things you need to accept up front:

  • Weight. The horn is a cordless-drill-sized unit with four metal trumpets, and a Milwaukee® M18™ XC5.0 battery alone weighs about 1.5 lb. Total, you're carrying several pounds of horn and battery. On a 60-lb e-bike with a motor, I genuinely didn't notice it. On my old 22-lb road bike, I did — every gram counts on an unassisted climb, and this is the wrong product for a weight-weenie build.
  • No handlebar mount in the box. A bike horn straps to your bars with a rubber ring. This doesn't. It's designed to be handheld or strap-mounted to a rack, roll cage, or flat surface. Handlebars on a bicycle are too narrow and too cluttered for the horn body itself.
  • It's a two-hands-or-remote situation. You're not thumbing a bar button mid-pedal unless you set it up right. The wireless remote is what makes the whole thing work on a bike — more on that below.

If all you want is a modest bar-mounted beeper for a paved trail, buy a purpose-built bike horn and be happy. If you want the loudest thing on two wheels — for rural roads with loose dogs, for commutes where drivers drift into the bike lane, for bear country on a fat-tire e-bike — keep reading.

Three Setups That Actually Worked for Me

I tested three carry methods over two weeks on an e-bike and a gravel bike. All three work; pick based on your bike.

1. Backpack carry + remote zip-tied to the bars

This is the setup I'd recommend to most riders. The horn rides in a backpack or pannier, trumpets angled up toward the top of the bag, and the small wireless remote zip-ties flat to the handlebar next to the grip. Need the horn? Press the remote — hands stay on the bars, eyes stay on the road. The remote fires reliably through the bag fabric; the standard fob is rated to 160 ft and I was never more than 3 ft away. Sound is muffled a few dB by the bag, so I ride with the top flap loose. Still overwhelmingly louder than anything bar-mounted.

2. Rear rack strap-mount

If your bike or e-bike has a rear cargo rack, two heavy-duty rubber straps (the same silicone light-mount straps sold everywhere) hold the horn body flat on the rack deck, trumpets facing forward or up. Full volume, nothing muffled, and the remote still lives on your bars. This is the closest thing to a "mounted" install on a bicycle, and it's the same no-drill strap approach I use on a motorcycle rack.

3. Cargo bike / basket carry

Front-loader cargo e-bikes and bikes with baskets are the easy case — the horn just sits in the bin, business end up. If you haul kids in a cargo box, this is genuinely useful: you have a 150 dB emergency signal within arm's reach in traffic.

Is a Train Horn Even Legal on a Bicycle?

This surprised me: bicycle audible-device laws are mostly about the minimum, not the maximum. Indiana requires a bell or other device audible from at least 100 feet. New Jersey has the same 100-foot audible-signal requirement. What many states actually prohibit on a bicycle is a siren or whistle — Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon, and Kentucky all ban those specifically. A horn is neither a siren nor a whistle. Minnesota's statute says it plainly: a bicycle may be equipped with a horn or bell designed to alert motor vehicles, while sirens and whistles are barred (Minn. Stat. 169.68).

That said, use your head. Local noise ordinances still apply, a 150 dB blast next to a pedestrian's ear is genuinely harmful, and "I was legal" won't un-scare the horse on the bridle path. My rules on a bike are the same as on a truck: fire it at vehicles that are about to hit you, at loose dogs closing distance, or in a genuine emergency — not at joggers, and never at close range to a person. And wear your own hearing protection when you're testing it; on a bike your ears are two feet from the trumpets.

FAQ

Can I bolt it to the handlebars like a normal bike horn?

No, and I wouldn't try — the drill-style body is too big for bar space and the leverage on a clamp would be ugly on a pothole. Backpack, pannier, rack-strap, or basket. The remote is what belongs on your handlebar.

Does it use my e-bike's battery?

No. It runs entirely off its own Milwaukee® M18™ pack — any M18 battery you already own clicks in. It draws nothing from the e-bike's system, and an e-bike battery couldn't power it anyway: different voltage, different connector. If you have M18 packs on the charger in your garage, you already own the expensive part.

How long does a battery last on a bike?

Effectively forever in bicycle terms. Horn blasts are one or two seconds each, and a charged pack delivers hundreds of blasts before it quits. I ran a full two weeks of commuting — several blasts a day — without recharging.

Is 150 dB overkill for a bicycle?

For a quiet rail-trail, yes — and I'd tell you to buy a bell. For road riding around distracted drivers, the entire problem is that everything marketed to cyclists is too quiet at real distances. The honest answer is: it's overkill in exactly the way that finally gets you heard through a closed car window. If 150 dB is more than you want to carry, the 130 dB dual-trumpet version splits the difference.
