None of my rigs look like they're carrying 150 dB, and that's exactly how I like it. I've spent the last year finding hidden mounting spots for a Train Horn for Milwaukee® 18v Battery on my truck, my side-by-side, and my boat — and along the way I learned the one physics rule that separates a stealth install that still rattles windows from one that sounds like it's blasting from inside a shoebox.

Why a Battery Horn Is Easier to Hide Than Any Air-Tank Kit

I used to do traditional train horn installs back in my diesel-mechanic days, and hiding one of those was a weekend project. The classic stealth move in the air-tank world is deleting the spare tire so a 5-gallon tank and compressor can live between the frame rails, then running air lines to trumpets tucked behind the bumper and wiring to a switch in the cab. It works, but you lose your spare and burn two days doing it.

The One Rule: Hide the Horn, Not the Sound

Here's the physics, and I'll borrow it from the highway engineers. The Federal Highway Administration's data on noise barriers shows a solid barrier typically cuts sound by 5 to 10 dB — enough to halve perceived loudness — and a barrier starts working the moment it breaks line-of-sight between the source and the listener. Now flip that around for a stealth horn install. A solid steel panel between your trumpets and the street is a noise barrier working against you — expect to give up real loudness, the same 5–10 dB a highway wall takes off traffic noise. But an opening kills the barrier effect. So the whole game is this: the horn body can hide behind anything; the trumpet mouths need a clear escape path. Aim them at a gap — the opening under a bumper, the slot between bed and frame, a wheel-well cavity — and a concealed horn gives up almost nothing.

Hidden Spots on a Truck That Actually Work

These are the spots I've either run myself or crawled under other guys' trucks to inspect, ranked by how well they balance concealment against sound escape:

  • Under the bed, aimed down and back. The air-horn crowd has mounted trumpets to a plate under the bed for years, and it's still the best stealth spot on a pickup. Bracket the horn to the underside of the bed or the frame-side, trumpet mouths pointed down toward the gap between the bed and the ground. Invisible unless someone kneels next to the truck, and the sound pours out underneath.
  • The spare-tire pocket. Traditional kits colonize this space with an air tank and force you to give up the spare. A battery horn is compact enough to tuck beside the spare on a bracket instead of replacing it. Sound exits rearward under the bumper.
  • In the bed, behind a crossbed toolbox. My daily setup. A full quad-trumpet unit sits in the front corner of the bed, completely shadowed by the toolbox from street level. Trumpets aim up and back over the bed rail, so there's no barrier at all — this spot gives up nothing acoustically and takes five minutes with a strap or magnetic mount.
  • Behind the rear bumper. Plenty of room on most pickups, and the bumper opening gives the trumpets their escape path. Just keep the horn clear of the exhaust outlet — heat is harder on plastic and rubber components than water is.
  • Under a tonneau cover — storage yes, blasting no. A closed hard tonneau turns the whole bed into a sealed box, and that's the one setup that genuinely muffles a horn. I stage the horn under the cover between uses and prop it open or set the horn on the tailgate when it's time to be loud.

Stealth Spots for Jeeps, UTVs, Boats, and RVs

The same escape-path rule travels to everything else I own:

  • Jeeps and off-road rigs: inside the rear bumper cavity or under the tub, tucked between the frame rails. The part I like most: nothing hangs below the frame, so your approach and departure angles stay exactly where the factory put them.
  • UTVs and side-by-sides: under the cargo bed or behind the front fascia, strapped or clamped — no drilling into plastic. The remote velcros to the wheel or handlebar, so the horn can live wherever fits.
  • Boats: inside a console or transom locker with the hatch cracked open when underway. Bonus stealth move: the horn isn't mounted at all, so it comes home with me at night. Can't steal what isn't there.
  • RVs: an exterior storage bay is the natural pocket. Swing the bay door open and the horn has a clean line to open air; door closed, it's invisible at the campground.

Weather, Drainage, and the Battery

Hidden spots under a vehicle are wet spots — that's the trade. Two habits keep it a non-issue:

  • Trumpets down or rearward so water drains. This is the same orientation advice the air-horn installers have given for years: mouths angled down and back, so road spray that gets in runs right back out instead of pooling in the bell.
  • Protect the pack, or just pull it. The trumpets shrug off weather; the Milwaukee® 18v battery is the part I baby. In a concealed under-bed spot I face the pack away from the tire spray, and in real weather I click the battery off and bring it inside — a two-second job that no wired horn can match. What I Don't Do

I don't seal the horn in a box. A fully enclosed horn loses serious loudness — that's the FHWA barrier math working against you from every direction at once — and a sealed enclosure traps moisture against the one component that hates it.

I don't blast from inside the cab. A 130–150 dB horn firing inside a closed cab is a hearing hazard, full stop. The horn lives outside the cabin, and I wear ear protection any time I'm testing within arm's reach. Loud is a feature — install it right.

I don't treat "hidden" as a legal strategy. A stealth mount is about a clean-looking rig, not about sneaking anything past anyone. Where and when you can legally blast a train horn depends on your state's rules for horn use on public roads, and a concealed mount doesn't change a single word of those laws. Know your state, keep the big blasts for private property and off-road, and you'll never have a problem.

FAQ

Does hiding the horn make it quieter?

Only if you box it in. FHWA's barrier data says a solid panel between source and listener cuts 5–10 dB, but an opening destroys the barrier effect — so a hidden horn with trumpet mouths aimed at a gap gives up almost nothing. Hide the body, never the mouths.

Do I have to drill holes for a stealth mount?

No. Every spot in this guide works with straps, clamps, or magnetic mounts — the horn is one self-contained unit with no air lines or wiring to route, so there's nothing that forces a drill bit into your truck.

Will the wireless remote fire the horn through metal?

The remote is rated up to 2000 ft in open air, and from the driver's seat to anywhere on the same vehicle it has fired every time for me, including horns tucked behind steel. Metal does eat radio range at longer distances, so test the remote from where you'll actually use it before you lock in the final spot.

Can I leave the horn mounted out there in the rain?

The trumpets and horn body handle weather fine in a sheltered spot with the mouths draining downward. The battery is the part to protect: shield it from direct spray, and when the forecast turns ugly, click the pack off and take it inside.
