The Short Answer: No — the Battery Can't Be in Two Places
Every M18™-compatible train horn I've tested is 100% battery-powered. There's no wall plug on the horn, no USB port, no 12V pigtail. You click a Milwaukee® M18 pack onto the horn's battery mount, and that pack is the entire power system: it spins the built-in compressor, which feeds the trumpets directly. No air tank, no wiring into the vehicle.
Milwaukee® chargers work the same way in reverse: the pack has to be docked in the charger bay to take a charge. There's no cable that tops off an M18 battery while it stays mounted on a tool — that's true across the whole platform, not just with horns. So "run it while it charges" isn't a settings problem or a missing accessory. It's physics: one battery, one location.
The good news is that this limitation matters a lot less than people think. The horn sips power compared to a saw or a grinder — my measured numbers are further down — and M18 packs recharge fast enough that a basic two-pack rotation means the horn literally never goes quiet.
Why There's No Pass-Through Charging on the M18™ Platform
Pass-through charging — powering a device while the same battery is being refilled — is a power-bank feature. Some USB power banks route wall current to both the output and the cells at the same time. Power tool platforms don't do this, and there are good reasons why:
- Heat. Charging a lithium-ion pack generates heat. Discharging it hard generates more heat. Doing both at once is the fastest way I know to cook cells and shorten pack life — even power-bank makers warn that heavy pass-through use shortens cycle life.
- Current mismatch. A horn compressor pulls a burst of high current on every blast. A charger is built to push a controlled, steady current into resting cells. Mixing the two would need charge electronics Milwaukee® simply doesn't build into M18 packs or chargers.
- The connector is the mount. The horn occupies the pack's terminal rails. The charger bay needs those same rails. There's physically nowhere to connect both.
So instead of fighting the platform, work with it: charge fast, swap fast.

Two details worth knowing. First, the Super Charger's headline speeds only apply to HIGH OUTPUT™ and FORGE™ packs — standard packs charge at roughly Rapid Charger speeds no matter what you dock them in. Second, charging isn't linear: a 6.0Ah HIGH OUTPUT pack hits about 80% in roughly 15 minutes on the Super Charger, then slows down to finish the last 20% gently. For horn duty, 80% is plenty — I don't wait for the fourth light.

Charging Rules I Actually Follow
The charging setup is the one place I see people get sloppy at events. - Let a hot pack rest a few minutes before docking. A pack that just fired off fifty blasts in the sun may sit above the charge window. The charger will wait for it anyway; giving it five minutes in the shade first just gets you charging sooner.

Can I plug the horn itself into a wall outlet or my truck's 12V socket?
No. There's no AC or 12V input on any battery train horn I sell or test — the M18 pack is the only power source. If you want a horn that's permanently wired to vehicle power, that's a different product category with a very different install day. The battery-mount design is the whole point: zero wiring, and the horn moves between your truck, boat, and side-by-side.
Can I charge M18 packs at an event with no outlet nearby?
Yes — that's exactly what I do. A charger plugged into a modest inverter off the truck battery handles it; check your charger's nameplate rating against the inverter's output before you buy one. Between the inverter, a charged spare, and 500+ blasts per 6.0Ah pack, running dry takes genuine commitment.
Does leaving the pack clicked onto the horn overnight drain it?
